    About the IBDP Curriculum

    Introduction Summary Requirements

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year educational programme that provides an internationally accepted secondary school qualification for students entering universities. Students may only participate if their school is a recognised IB school.

All subjects except CAS are assessed using both internal and external assessors. Students will not receive an IB Diploma, regardless of the total score obtained, if they do not complete the core requirements. The externally assessed examinations are given worldwide in May and November. Subjects finish with a standardised series of examinations, usually consisting of two or three timed written examinations.

    • Internationally based but must be taken under an IB approved school
    • Two-year programme for students Grade 11–12 or Year 12–13
    • 6 subjects taken in varying subjects with standardised final exams
    • 3 core requirements (Extended Essay / Theory of Knowledge (ToK) / Creativity, Action, Service (CAS))
    • IB Diploma awarded at completion of all requirements

Students study six subjects from six different subject groups:

    • Group 1: Studies in language and literature
    • Group 2: Language and acquisition
    • Group 3: Individuals and societies
    • Group 4: Sciences
    • Group 5: Mathematics
    • Group 6: The arts

Students may study an additional subject from groups 1–5 instead of a group 6 subject.

Assessment: The highest score for each subject is 7 points; thus, the total maximum for all six subjects is 42 points.

Students are required to complete three core requirements:

    • Extended Essay (EE): 3,500 – 4,000 words — externally assessed
    • Theory of Knowledge (TOK): oral presentation—internally assessed & 1,600-word essay—externally assessed
    • Creativity, Action, Service (CAS): 3 x 50 hours & CAS Portfolio—no formal assessment; must complete by demonstrating all achieved learning outcomes

Assessment: Up to 3 points can be awarded, depending on the grades achieved in the EE and TOK, bringing the total maximum IB score to 45 points.
